Know Your Plastic - Article 5

Type 5 Plastic - PP (Polypropylene)

Polypropylene plastic is tough and lightweight, and has excellent heat-resistance qualities. It serves as a barrier against moisture, grease and chemicals.

When you try to open the thin plastic liner in a cereal box, it is polypropylene. This keeps your cereal dry and fresh. PP is also commonly used for disposable diapers, pails, plastic bottle tops, margarine and yogurt containers, potato chip bags, straws, packing tape and rope. PP is most often labeled "microwave safe." This plastic is sturdy and heat resilient.

When any plastic begins to pit or show signs of wear, the damage increases; so discontinue microwave and dishwasher use at that point. Same as LDPE, PP is considered a safer plastic option for food and drink use.

Though it bears all those good usable qualities, PP isn't quite recyclable and could also cause asthma and hormone disruption in human. However PP is considered safe for reuse and one can recycle products made from PP to some extent.
